Helping the Children of Africa

July 3, 2013   6:40 pm  A lot of people have many different views on how to help Africa. I agree that its very bad to give money to anyone you see on the street. Most of the time if money is given to begging children it will immediately be taken by their guardian/older sibling or other relative. It won't help the child. So in our sponsorship program we've always tried to focus on education for the children and not giving handouts to the parents. They should try their best to find whatever work is available. Most times parents especially the men of the house will spend their money on themselves and not give a second thought to their kids. This is why we want the children to have the chance to get an education even if their own family doesn't /can't provide for them. Feb 18, 11:23 am I remember the little girl at school who hung her head when I said where is your bed. Another child said "She doesn't have one". She showed me her mattress that she puts on the dorm floor each night just like several of the other girls. They sleep 2  people to each twin size mattress. Sometimes more. She has no home and no family that wanted her. They were tired of her so she lives permanently at school until finishing grade 7 when she can move on to high school. There are so many kids like her. One's who need attention no matter their age. Even the teenage boys at the school liked playing with hot wheels cars and they always asked a lot of questions about their sponsors. It's hard to be a kid when there are no adults who can give advice and encouragement to them daily. It's a hard culture to live in also when kids aren't treated as the important people they are. Nov 11, 2012 7:23 am During my trip to the school I saw many new things and many others that needed improving. The most major problem at the school is food .. But also rats in the food storage area. They carry so many diseases and if they get into the food they will pass on things that are usually deadly. So someone needs to either get cats or find another way to get rid of the rats. Plus leaving the huge pile of maize out in the open on the floor of a classroom is real unsanitary and its so easy for all kinds of bugs, animals and parasites to get in the food and the kids step all over it. Flies even fall into their food since its served outside. So the kids were still semi living like animals with animals. Rats run around in the dorms and can bite the kids and some wild animal (a leopard they think) came one night and killed/ate 6 goats. So I told the kids don't ever go out after dark at school. Some of you may wonder if it really helps when you give to a charity. I've heard many things over the years, most just opinions of missionaries or those who do more "analyzing" than helping. Some people say missionaries or aid workers shouldn't take clothing, shoes and other supplies to poor countries when instead you can buy them from a market in the country you visit. Now that's all fine and dandy in a perfect world but almost every country in Africa charges $10-$20 or more for a pair of shoes that will fall apart quickly. The same with clothing made in Africa. Not all of it is great. The dyes run and the material is very thin and doesn't last long after washing it. The same with books and other school supplies. Who wants to pay $7 or more for 1 chapter in africa when people can donate them for free.  So who wouldn't want to take donated clothes, books, toys, medical supplies and shoes to a country who's people are in need. March 5,2012 7:40pm So MANY KIDS Still need a sponsor. About 50 new kids joined New Victory School in January so they along with about 100 others need a sponsor so they can get an education and 2 meals a day. The cost is only $15 a month. Click on our Yellow DONATE button which takes you to pay pal. These kids are so needy. Most of them have only 1 parent and a lot live with Aunt's Uncles, or grandparents. Those who live with relatives typically aren't treated very well. They are denied education and even food, clothes etc. Most relatives don't want to raise an orphan that's not their own. Some of the kids live in small mud huts and a typical house has only 1 or 2 rooms shared by the whole family. If they have beds 2 or 3 kids share or they sleep on the floor on a straw mat.
